Shrewsbury Town in the Community offer the chance to gain industry-recognised coaching awards whilst being affiliated to a professional football club through our Foundation Degree!
Our course is designed in partnership with the English Football League Trust, and done through the University of South Wales with students being based at Shrewsbury Town Football Club. It is here you will be able to study all sub-disciplines of coaching on top of your coaching qualifications and will teach you aspects of children’s and youth coaching, football coaching, football development, social inclusion and sports management skills.
How Will I Study?
You will learn through classroom-based lectures and seminars in the educational room in the Community Hub based at Shrewsbury Town Football Club. As well as practical learning in the fields and laboratories at the University of South Wales Campus in Cardiff when on residential. You will complete up to 200 hours of coaching (work-based learning) to give you vital skills for a career in youth coaching, football development, sports science or performance analysis.
You will be enrolled as a student at the University of South Wales and have access to the online library, virtual learning environment and other learning materials. Your residential will take place in Cardiff at the University of South Wales base where you will receive full accommodation during these teaching blocks and your weekly academic lectures will take place in the education hub based at Shrewsbury Town Football Club.
Who is it for?
Anyone who is looking to gain a career in sport, this is the course for you! This course allows you a variety of different career paths once you have graduated. You could become a community manager, social inclusion officer, women and girls officer at a professional football club, football development officer, football in the community coach, or sports development officer. You could even enter other careers, such as the armed forces or emergency services. The possibilities are endless!
To enrol on this course, you will need to have achieved MM for BTEC National Certificate or Level 3 National Diploma, MPP at Extended Diploma or DD at A Level PE. You will need to have 3 GCSEs with grade C or above. You will also need to have some basic experience of coaching children.
Community Football Coaching and Development
The course has been designed in conjunction with the EFL Trust. It allows you to study all sub- disciplines of coaching and football development whilst gaining valuable industry-recognised qualifications. It will teach you aspects of children’s and youth coaching, football coaching, football development, social inclusion, and sports management skills.
The academic programme enables you to gain a Level 2 Football Coaching Certificate (pending a final assessment). The course is designed to give you the best opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in all coaching-related and football development disciplines. You will be integrated into the football club and engaged in community coaching and football development opportunities.
Typical Offer Requirements
- BTEC Diploma
- Merit/Merit in relevant subjects
- A Levels
- DD – To include at least one A Level in Mathematics, Science, Physical Education or Phycology but excluding General Studies, AND Level 1 in Football Coaching or equivalent foundation level football coaching qualification.
- The University normally requires a minimum 3 GCSEs including Mathematics/Numeracy and English at Grade C or Grade 4 or above, or their equivalent, but consideration is given to individual circumstances.
