Amputee Football – Meet Nathan

Shrewsbury Town have launched a new session for the 2018/19 season in partnership with England Amputee Football Association to support amputees, people with limb deficiencies and persons with restricted use of limbs.

The sessions aim to provide participants with the opportunity to play football locally, nationally and internationally. So if you are a cancer survivor, ex or serving military, or limbless/limb impaired for any other reason, you’re welcome to try this fantastic sport – You don’t need crutches to play this game!

The coaches from Shrewsbury Town in the Community design the sessions to improve the skills and fitness of the participants, whilst providing a fun and friendly environment to do so.

Nathan Trefine started attending the amputee football sessions in April 2018, when the sessions first started, having lost the lower part of his right leg during an accident. After being recommended the Shrewsbury Town sessions, Nathan has been an almost ever-present and has seen some great life changes from it.

“I started attending the sessions as I loved playing football before I had my accident, and this session has given me the opportunity to start playing again and improve my fitness. There aren’t any of these sessions across Shropshire and having this opportunity enables me to do just that.

“Since I’ve started coming to the Shrewsbury Town sessions I’ve seen my fitness improve, which was affected from being in a wheelchair for a while. I’ve met loads of new people, both in the amputee group and the down syndrome group, and it’s good to play against other disabilities.

“It was a session that was recommended to me, and it’s been the perfect session. It’s definitely something I’d recommend to anyone who is into football to come to as it’s great fun and gives you the opportunity to enjoy the sport again.”
