Shrewsbury Town in the Community are delighted to announce our Community Day and Armed Forces Match Day will take place on 23rd March 2019 for the visit of Portsmouth to Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Throughout Community Day in the lead up to the game and at half-time we will be celebrating and recognising the achievements of all our community programmes, ranging from partner schools, Health and Inclusion, Education, and Football Development.

We will be inviting all our participants to take part in a sponsored walk from the site of the old Gay Meadow down to our current home at Montgomery Waters Meadow in order to raise funds and raise awareness of the variety of ways we try to help everyone across Shropshire realise their potential and achieve their goals. Participants will also complete a lap of honour around the pitch at half-time.

Before the game starts there will also be a number of activities taking place around the ground at the Community Hub and the brandnew Community Football Hub. At the new facility we will be holding tournaments for both our Walking Football and Head’s Up projects, which aim to encourage active ageing and offer a space for those suffering from mental health issues to take part in sport respectively.  We are delighted that Portsmouth FC’s official charity, Pompey ITC will also be sending a team to take part in our Walking Football tournament!

Along with all this our local Armed Forces will be taking over the fanzone with themed activities and the Cadet band will lead the lap of honour around the pitch at half time.

From 1pm until 2.45pm, the fanzone will be open to welcome visitors and will include exciting displays and activities such as an inflatable assault course, weapon displays, personal protection equipment, military vehicles a battlefield ambulance, RAF Police, a Marching Band and a static helicopter.

Sean McCarthy, the Armed Forces Covenant Officer at Shropshire Council said, “This will be the 4th Armed Forces Match Day and Fan Park that Shrewsbury Town FC has hosted. It shows their commitment to support the Armed Forces Community as well as highlighting the important role that Armed Forces Covenant signees and military charities play. The Fan Park will give the opportunity for people to ask questions and to get involved as well as showcasing the military presence that we have in Shropshire. Entry to the Fan park is free and so I hope that there will be a good turnout.

This will be a great day celebrating the community around Shrewsbury Town FC and the role the armed forces plays within that community, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone there!
