Community Champions Dinner – 30th November 2018

Friday 30th November saw our annual Community Champions Gala Dinner take place in the Sovreign Suite at Montgomery Waters Meadow. It was a fantastic evening celebrating the hard-work of all our staff, volunteers and participants across all our programmes.

Along with a three-course meal, entertainment on the night was provided by 18x World Record holder and football freestyler, Ash Randell. The evening was hosted by local legend and head of Trustees, Ryan Jervis MBE and former Shrews Women’s star, Michelle Owen.

We highlighted the work of three individuals in particular from our ‘Play For Us’, ‘Learn With Us’ and ‘Study With Us’ pathways.

Sam Jones was highlighted for his development and progression into the Shrewsbury Town Academy after his talent was recognised at one of our school sessions and then invited to attend our Advanced Development Centre. He is currently performing well and looking very promising for the future, showing lots of potential.

Fenton gained recognition for achieving his goals in improving his coordination, balance and agility, along with gaining more confidence than ever before through his involvement within our Reading Stars Intervention. Before the interventions, Fenton was quite shy and avoided talking in group conversations or being in the spotlight, however through the Reading Stars project, has now been able to read aloud to the whole class and become more involved with PE sessions.

Finally Mark Bull received praise for his work in our ‘Study With Us’ pathway after joining us through enrolling in our Foundation Degree scheme in 2017 and since has gotten involved with numerous other projects, most notably, our Pedal2Pool fundraiser, helping to organise the Kick Cancer pilot programme and even travelled to Ghana as part of our NCS trip.

A fundraising auction took place and contributed to the amazing total of £7,500 raised throughout the night. This will be used to help Shrewsbury Town in the Community carry out even more work across Shropshire in the next year, including the re-launch of Kick Cancer, and our new Together Stronger campaign which aims to encourage healthy living across Shropshire through collaborative work between different organisations.

We would like to thank everyone who helped contribute to the money raised, our main sponsor for the evening, Shropshire Homes and all those who helped organise and run the event.

Howard Thorne of Shrophsire Homes (Headline Sponsor) had this  to say about the event.

“I have only really got to know Shrewsbury Town in the Community over the last few months and have been really impressed by the variety and quality of the work that they do. Shropshire Homes are very pleased to support them and to sponsor the Gala Dinner!”

We look forward to seeing you all at our next Gala Dinner in 2019!

Thanks to our other sponsors for the night:
