Shrewsbury Town in the Community have seen their National Citizen Service (NCS) programme for the summer of 2018 become a massive success, with over 400 young people aged between 15 and 17 graduating from the programme.

Each wave of the NCS programme is designed to run over 4 weeks and will enable the participants to learn a range of new skills whilst being pushed outside of their comfort zone on a range of activities, some of which will challenge them to face their fears.

The first week of this summer’s NCS programme saw each wave of young people taken to their away residential stage, based at PGL Liddington near Swindon, where everyone participated in a range of outdoor adventure activities and team building exercises.

Week two saw the start of phase two, the NCS home residential phase. This was based at Walford College where the young people were able to build valuable life skills and increase their independence and responsibility within the living arrangements for the week.

The final two weeks saw each participant plan and complete their social action project, where each team within the raise are set the task of planning events to raise money and awareness for local charities.

Over the 10 weeks that the 4-wave NCS programme ran, the young people have donated nearly 12,000 voluntary hours towards fundraising for a number of local charities by completing social action projects. These hours have seen over £29,000 raised for local charities.

Speaking of the success that the National Citizen Programme has had this year, NCS Manager Sarah Hamer said,

“NCS Summer 2018 has been very successful. We’ve had two 100% assessments this summer, which shows that the programme has grown and developed in strength.

“With over 400 young people graduating it shows that this programme is growing in size and strength, and now we’re heading towards the autumn programme with this successful summer behind us.”
