Saturday saw the return of the annual Summer Cup sponsored by DM Recruitment at Ludlow Football Stadium, which gave grass-roots clubs from seven different counties the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming season with tournaments running for U7-U12 age groups.

The day got underway from in the morning with our U7, U8 and U11s tournament taking place throughout the morning. All the fixtures were very competitive and played out with great spirit from everyone involved. Over 140 goals were scored in the U7, and U8 groups which were non-competitive with all players taking part receiving a medal. The U11s tournament was won by NC United who just managed to get past FC Telford, winning 2-1 in the final.

Unfortunately, we were not as lucky as last year with the weather and the late morning saw particularly heavy showers during the presentations for the morning groups. However, these soon cleared up and from 12pm onwards we were treated to clear skies for the rest of day providing some excellent footballing conditions for the afternoons age-groups.

The U9, U11, and U12 tournaments took centre stage in the afternoon which saw Leominster Town, Cradley Town and Perdiswell Colts as the respective winners of their age-groups.

This year the summer cup saw 673 players taking part, 65 teams competing and saw 689 goals being scored! Several parents and coaches commented on how much they and the players enjoyed the day with one commenting ‘2019 was our first Summer Cup tournament with our new U7s, the lads had a fantastic time and the facilities at the stadium were fantastic. We can’t wait to come back next year!’

Shrewsbury Town in the Community Operations Manager, Steve Brotherwood, was delighted with how the day went.

“We’ve had another fantastic day at Ludlow with so many new teams coming to compete from a range of different counties. It has been a great opportunity to show off the facilities which we have put a lot of work into and there has been some fantastic football on display. We can’t wait to do it all again next year!”

Thanks to all the teams, coaches, parents and volunteers who made the day possible! We hope you all had a great time and we look forward to seeing you again!
