Kick Cancer participants outside Montgomery Waters Meadow

Volunteers’ Week takes place from 1st-7th June and aims to celebrate the work of volunteers all over the country along with highlighting the benefits this provides to both volunteers themselves and local communities.

Our volunteers enable us to deliver our projects to the highest standard, helping out in a range of ways from supporting in delivering sessions, driving support vehicles on our Cycling Challenge events, and helping set up matchday activities.

One such volunteer is Dorothy, who got involved three years ago when she first moved into the area. Dorothy was diagnosed with leukaemia 20 years ago and volunteering is her way of giving something back after being overwhelmed by the support she received herself after her diagnosis and during her treatment. “Unfortunately, when I was going through treatment, I didn’t have access to the same activities which are available through Shrewsbury Town in the Community like Kick Cancer which is a brilliant idea and I wish it was about back then. Speaking to the patients I can really see the benefit of them being able to get away from the treatment and being able to have fun and some exercise.”

Dorothy now helps out on a range of projects such as Kick CancerShrewsAbility, and Extra-Time donating around 5-6 hours of her time a week.  “I was told about ShrewsAbility and I’ve always wanted to help children with Downs Syndrome so this was my chance to do that. Seeing their happy faces and how much fun they have in that hour is just brilliant. Spending the time here with the kids and the Extra-Time participants gives you such an uplift. I leave feeling really good knowing that I’ve helped out and made a difference to others’ lives. The work done at Shrewsbury Town in the Community really is for a good cause.”

Everyone at Shrewsbury Town in the Community would like to take this opportunity to thank Dorothy for her contributions to the charity over the last three years along with thanking all of our volunteers for their time and effort!
